The They, Them, Their series explores gender fluidity and reflects on how power and identity are shaped in today’s world. I work with natural lacquer, a material with 8,000 years of history, made from the sap of lacquer trees. When it comes into contact with air, it slowly hardens into a tough, protective layer. This transformation is what draws me in. I apply liquid lacquer onto soft textiles. It seeps into the fibers and gradually stiffens, turning into something that can no longer be easily changed.I believe that the transformation of materials is a form of expression in itself. It reminds me of us. Our bodies, genders, identities are layered, reshaped, and defined by the society we live in. This process can feel like both a form of pressure and a source of strength. My work captures these traces of change and speaks to how we grow, struggle, and transform within systems.
